Prosecutors: Charles Moore gunned down motorist Jarell Dotson on South Side

Charles Moore man was ordered held without bond Thursday for allegedly fatally shooting Jarell Dotson on the South Side.

Moore, nicknamed “Lil Charles,” opened fire on a passing van about 12:35 a.m. May 15 in the 6300 block of South May Street -- killing 22-year-old driver Doston, according to court documents.

Dotson had just turned onto May Street when Moore walked out from between two cars and opened fire into the passenger’s side, prosecutors said.

Dotson was shot four times, and crashed the van into a tree and another car, according to court documents.

Dotson, of the 6700 block of South Aberdeen Street, died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. The death was ruled a homicide.

A 25-year-old man in the passenger’s seat survived a gunshot wound to the armpit and a broken jaw suffered in the crash, prosecutors said.

Police recovered seven shell casings from the scene, according to court documents.

Witnesses identified the shooter as “Lil Charles,” and police issued a warrant for his arrest, prosecutors said. Police learned Moore, 18, was back on the South Side and arrested him Tuesday, authorities said.

Moore, of the 300 block of East 68th Street, was charged with one count each of first-degree murder and attempted murder, police said.

On Thursday, Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Moore held without bond, said Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Lisa Gordon. He will be back in court Nov. 5.

Prosecutors said Moore has previously been arrested for assault, reckless conduct and cannabis.
