Deonte Davis | Homicide Watch Chicago news about Deonte Davisen-usTue, 14 Jun 2016 14:25:17 -0500Man charged with fatal shooting of Urban Prep student Christopher Fields, wounding of second teenager<p>By JORDAN OWEN<br /> Chicago Sun-Times Wire<br /> <img src="" alt="Deonte Davis | Chicago Police" width="240" height="300" class="size-medium wp-image-18382" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Deonte Davis | Chicago Police</p><br /> A man has been charged with killing 17-year-old Urban Prep student <a href="">Christopher Fields</a> and wounding a 19-year-old man in a shooting late Saturday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.</p> <p><a href="">Deonte Davis</a>, 26, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery, according to Chicago Police.</p> <p>Fields and the older teen were standing on the sidewalk in the 5200 block of South Sangamon at 10:24 p.m. Saturday when Davis, who was driving a silver car, stopped alongside them and opened fire, police said.</p> <p>Fields, of the 6200 block of South Sangamon, was shot in the back, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 11:17 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The 19-year-old was shot in the left wrist and was taken to the same hospital in good condition.</p> <p>About five minutes before the shooting, Davis had tried to rob a 53-year-old man at gunpoint in the 5100 block of South Halsted, police said. The robbery was unsuccessful and Davis took off without any proceeds. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 24.</p> <p>Fields was a sophomore at Urban Prep Englewood Campus, according to a statement from school CEO Tim King.</p> <p>“Mr. Fields was not the intended target, but rather was the victim of a senseless act of violence,” according to King. “Undoubtedly, Mr. Fields thought that by walking on his street, steps from his home, he was being safe–and he should’ve been."</p> <p>King said Fields “will be deeply missed.”</p> <p>He was also a promising young boxer at the Hudson Campbell Sports & Fitness Center, where he competed with the nickname "SandMan."</p> <p>Donations to support Fields’ family can be made at the <a href="">Urban Prep</a> website by entering “Christopher Fields” in the “In Memory of” section.</p> Jeff MayesTue, 14 Jun 2016 14:25:17 -0500 FieldsDeonte Davis
