Bond denied for 17-year-old charged with fatal shooting of DeAngelo Birge in West Garfield Park

A 17-year-old boy accused of killing DeAngelo Birge and wounding another man in a West Garfield Park neighborhood shooting earlier this month was ordered held without bond Thursday.

Devion Kimble, 17, is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. He is also charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Birge, 24, and another 24-year-old man were sitting in a car parked in the 4300 block of West Maypole about 3:15 p.m. Oct. 6 when Kimble walked up to the driver-side back window and fired at least nine bullets into the car, prosecutors said.

Birge, of the 4200 block of West Jackson, was shot twice in the head and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 p.m., authorities said. The other 24-year-old was shot in the head and finger, and was also taken to Stroger, where he was treated and released.

Multiple witnesses identified Kimble as the shooter, and he admitted the crime to a third party days after the shooting, prosecutors said.

Kimble was previously charged as a juvenile with unlawful use of a weapon. That case is pending in juvenile court.

Judge Donald Panarese ordered Kimble held without bond Thursday.
