A Logan Square man has been charged with shooting and killing Angel Ortiz Jr., a bouncer at an Irving Park neighborhood bar, earlier this month.

Felix Valentin, 28, is charged with one count of first-degree murder for the death of the 51-year-old Ortiz on April 2, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Ortiz was working about 11:45 p.m. as a bouncer at Brudder’s Bar and Grill at 3600 North Pulaski when Valentin fired shots from the street into the window, authorities said.

A witness said the bouncer was trying to break up a fight before someone “came around the corner and shot him right in the head–dead point. That’s when everyone started running. The bouncer was, you know, trying to do his job.”

Ortiz was shot in the head, and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:39 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 2600 block of North Normandy.

Afterwards, a silver minivan with bullet holes in the windows was parked on the south side of West Addison, surrounded by police tape.

A woman who lives a few doors down from the bar was about to take her dog for a walk when she said heard shots.

“We noticed [the bouncer] on the floor. They were doing CPR on him … right in the doorway,” she said. The woman preferred to remain anonymous because she “didn’t want to get shot next.”

Valentin was arrested about 10 p.m. Wednesday at his home in the 2200 block of North Avers, police said. He was expected to appear in bond court Friday.

Brudder's is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shooting.

But Ald. John Arena would like to see public nuisance hearings regarding the bar.

"I am also working with Ald. Reboyras, the Law Department, and Vice to come up with a long-term solution to keep our neighborhood and its residents safe," Arena posted to Facebook.

A memorial fund to help pay funeral expenses for Angel Ortiz has raised more than $9,500 of its $10,000 goal.
