Jermaine Wright charged with fatal shooting of Adrian Jeffries in fight over woman in West Englewood

A man was ordered held without bond Thursday for allegedly shooting and killing Adrian Jeffries last summer in West Englewood in a fight over a woamn after a school reunion.

Jermaine Wright, 33, was charged with the murder Jeffries, who was gunned down Aug. 29. Wright’s brother and Jeffries fought over a woman before the shooting, authorities said. Wright’s brother is still being sought by police.

After the fight at 61st and Justine, a witness saw Wright’s brother go into a house and come out with a handgun, Assistant State’s Attorney Molly Donnelly said. Wright pulled up in an SUV, his brother got in and the two siblings drove off, the witness said.

Later that night, Jeffries, 44, was outside in the 6000 block of South Throop Street eating with friends when he walked into the street to talk to Wright’s brother’s girlfriend, Donnelly said.

Wright’s brother was sitting on his girlfriend’s parents’ porch, Donnelly said.

As Jeffries and the woman talked, Wright pulled up in his SUV, parked and got out of the car.

Wright asked his brother a question about Jeffries, and that’s when the two brothers started shooting, Donnelly said.

Wright’s brother eventually walked off the porch and kept aiming his gun at Jeffries, Donnelly said.

Jeffries was shot in his arm, back and head.

Wright drove away in his SUV while his brother fled on foot, Donnelly said.

A witness called for an ambulance.

While Jeffries was being taken to the hospital, he told the paramedics that he had been shot by the brothers, Donnelly said. Jeffries later died at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Witnesses also identified Wright and his brother as the shooters, Donnelly said.

Multiple 9 mm shell casings and Wright’s brother’s cellphone were found at the scene, Donnelly said.
