A man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for a shooting over the Memorial Day weekend in 2015 that left Ruben Feliciano dead in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Giovanni Rios, 21, pleaded guilty to murder on May 19 murder before Judge Vincent Gaughan, according to Cook County court records.

Rios and 20-year-old Joseph Thrane were charged with fatally shooting the 20-year-old Feliciano about 4 p.m. on May 24, 2015, authorities said.

Feliciano, a car enthusiast, was driving around while three friends followed in separate vehicles, prosecutors said at the time. Rios and Thrane were in a black Saturn SUV with fellow Latin Kings flashing gang signs.

The SUV drove by the other roup, then partially blocked the path of Feliciano’s car, which was leading the others, prosecutors said.

The SUV rammed into the back of Feliciano’s car while he was stopped in traffic in the 3300 block of West Division, prosecutors said. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Thrane then pulled out a weapon and started shooting at Feliciano’s car multiple times.

Feliciano, who lived in the Logan Square neighborhood, tried to drive away, but struck several parked cars before coming to a stop, authorities said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 4:45 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The SUV sped away, but Feliciano’s three friends identified Thrane, prosecutors said. He pleaded guilty to murder last year and was sentenced to 31 years in prison.

Gaughan sentenced Rios to 23 years, according to court records. He is also serving an 18-month sentence for indirect criminal contempt.

He will receive credit for 748 days served in the Cook County Jail, and must serve three years of supervised release when he is freed.

One of two gang members charged with the fatal shooting of Ruben Feliciano over Memorial Day weekend last year in the Humboldt Park neighborhood has pleaded guilty.

Joseph Thrane pleaded guilty Monday to murder before Judge Vincent Gaughan and was sentenced to 31 years in prison, according to Cook County court records.

Thrane, then 18; and 20-year-old Giovanni Rios were charged with the shooting death of the 20-year-old Feliciano about 4 p.m. on May 24, 2015, authorities said.

Gaughan sentenced Thrane to 31 years in prison Monday, according to court records. He will receive credit for 353 days served in the Cook County Jail, and have to serve three years of supervised release when he is freed.

Rios is awaiting trial and was next scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Bond was set at $1 million Saturday for the second man charged with a Memorial Day weekend shooting that left 20-year-old Ruben Feliciano dead in Humboldt Park.

Giovanni Rios, 19, faces a first-degree murder charge for the May 24 shooting of Feliciano, according to Chicago Police. Joseph Thrane, 18, was arrested the week after the attack and remains in the Cook County Jail on a $2 million bond.

Feliciano, a car enthusiast, was driving around in his car while his three friends followed in three separate vehicles, prosecutors said.

Rios and Thrane were in a black Saturn SUV with fellow Latin Kings flashing gang signs before they opened fire on Feliciano about 4 p.m., prosecutors said at Thrane’s June bond hearing.

Joseph Thrane was in a black Saturn SUV with fellow Latin Kings flashing gang signs before he gunned down Ruben Feliciano in the Humboldt Park neighborhood May 24, authorities said.

Feliciano, a car enthusiast, was driving around in his car while his three other friends followed in three separate vehicles, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Akash Vyas said.

The SUV that Thrane was in drove by the group and then partially blocked the path of the Feliciano’s car, which was leading the others, Vyas said.

Thrane, who goes by the nickname “White Boy,” got out of the back passenger side of the SUV, threw a bottle at Feliciano’s car and tried to get inside before running back to the SUV, Vyas said.

Feliciano was able to drive away but the SUV trailed him and rammed into the back of his car while he was stopped in traffic around the 3300 block of West Division Street, prosecutors said.

The SUV rammed Feliciano’s car again, causing it to spin, Vyas said.

At this point, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Thrane allegedly pulled out a weapon and started shooting at Feliciano’s car multiple times.

Feliciano, 20, tried to drive away but struck several parked cars before coming to a stop, Vyas said.

The SUV sped away, but Feliciano’s three friends identified Thrane, of the 3200 block of West Wabansia Avenue, Vyas said.

One of Feliciano’s friends told authorities he had seen Thrane several times before, Vyas said.

Thrane was arrested Sunday. The 18-year-old Logan Square man was ordered held on $2 million bond Tuesday.

He was found delinquent twice before as a juvenile in a theft and robbery case, Vyas said.

Thrane is a ward of the state and has occasional contact with his father and grandfather, assistant public defendant Preston Jones said. His mother died, Jones said.

Thrane has a tattoo on his lower left arm that reads, “RIP Mom,” according to an arrest report.
