No bond for Demarco Bennett, who prosecutors allege shot Andre Donner Jr. more than 10 times in Englewood

A man has been charged with fatally shooting Andre D. Donner Jr. another man more than 10 times Sunday morning in Englewood.

Demarco Bennett, 19, of the 6900 block of South Green Street was charged with first-degree murder and also faces various traffic citations, according to Chicago Police.

Donner, 26, was standing by himself at the corner of 72nd and May just after 10 a.m. when Bennett got out of the passenger side of a silver vehicle and shot him twice in the head, once in the neck and eight times in the body, according to prosecutors.

Donner, of the 7000 block of South Lowe, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 10:41 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The silver vehicle was stopped by police a few minutes after the shooting after Bennett, who was then driving, committed a minor traffic violation, prosecutors said.

A passenger got out of the vehicle after it was stopped by police and went inside a nearby building while holding his side, prosecutors said. The passenger then went to the second floor of the building and threw a firearm into a neighboring yard, which was later recovered.

The gun was analyzed and a fingerprint on the inside of the magazine matched Bennett, prosecutors said. Shell casings found at the scene of the shooting also matched the gun.

An eyewitness to the shooting identified the vehicle as the one used in the shooting and identified Bennett as the shooter, prosecutors said.

Judge James Brown ordered Bennett held without bond Tuesday. Bennett was already out on bond for an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charge.

He is next scheduled to appear in court Jan. 4.

Demarco Bennett, 19, was charged with first-degree murder and also faces various traffic citations, according to Chicago Police.

Bennett fired shots at the 26-year-old Donner at 10:05 a.m. in the 7200 block of South May, police said.

Bennett then sped off in a vehicle, but officers were able to pull him over and arrest him after a short foot chase, police said. A second suspect was arrested but later released without charges.

Donner was shot in the head and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 10:41 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office. He lived in the 7000 block of South Lowe.

Bennett, of the 6900 block of South Green Street, was scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday.

WEEK IN REVIEW: Three men were fatally shot last week, lowest homicide total since first week of January

After a stretch of more than three days during which there were no homicides reported in the city, the week ended with three men fatally shot.

Two of them died over a violent weekend, during which at least 30 others were wounded in gunfire across the city.

The three fatalities marked the lowest homicide total for one week since two people were killed in the first week of the year, when two men were fatally shot during the week ending Jan. 4, marking the final homicide of 2014 and the first of this year.

The latest homicide in the city happened Sunday morning in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

Police found 26-year-old Andre D. Donner Jr. with a gunshot wound to the head about 10 a.m. in the 7200 block of South May, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died within the hour.

The other fatal shooting, Friday night in the South Side Washington Heights neighborhood, claimed the life of popular Simeon graduate Joseph Graves, who was home on Christmas break from his sophomore year at Southern Illinois University.

About 10:30 p.m., crews found the 19-year-old unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the back of the head in the 700 block of West 92nd Street, authorities said.

Graves, who lived in the 8400 block of South Green, was dead at the scene.

The week's first homicide was Kenneth Turner, who was critically wounded in a shooting Tuesday in Austin, and died a day later at a hospital.

The 28-year-old Turner was on the sidewalk in the 300 block of South Cicero just before 8 a.m. Dec. 8 when he was approached by a man wearing black clothing, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

The suspect fired multiple shots, then ran northbound through an alley, police said.

Turner, of the 3100 block of West Warren Boulevard, was shot in the head and was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital where he died at 3:44 p.m. Dec. 9, authorities said.

The shooting happened just after 10 a.m. in the 7200 block of South May, according to Chicago Police.

The 26-year-old Donner suffered a head wound and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 10:41 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Donner lived in the 7000 block of South Lowe, authorities said.

The circumstances of the shooting were unknown.
