Alleged gang member gets 50 years for fatally shooting Donald Lewis on Near North Side in 2013

An alleged member of the Gangster Disciples was sentenced to 50 years in prison Monday for fatally shooting 25-year-old Donald Lewis on the Near North Side in 2013.

Kenneth McDonald, 27, was found guilty of six counts of murder after a bench trial before Judge Williams Hooks, according to Cook County court records.

McDonald shot Donald Lewis about 4 a.m. July 21, 2013, near the 800 block of North Cambridge, according to prosecutors. McDonald walked up to Lewis and a group of people standing outside, pulled a gun and started shooting.

Lewis was shot multiple times and dropped off at Northwestern Memorial, where he later died, according to police.

One of the witnesses who was standing with Lewis also pulled a gun and started firing at McDonald, who was hit several times, prosecutors said. McDonald then dropped his gun and collapsed. He was taken to Northwestern with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police found the gun, and also six shell casings which matched bullets from McDonald’s gun, prosecutors said.

Judge William Hooks sentenced McDonald to 50 years in prison Monday, according to court records. McDonald will receive credit for 915 days served in the Cook County jail.

An alleged Gangster Disciple was ordered held on a $2.5 million bond Thursday after being charged with the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man Sunday on the Near North Side in an incident in which the suspect was also shot.

Kenneth McDonald is charged with first-degree murder for fatally shooting Donald Lewis at about 4 a.m. on July 21 near the 800 block of North Cambridge, according to Cook County prosecutors. Police initially said the shooting occurred in the 500 block of West Pearson.

McDonald, who is a known Gangster Disciple, according to prosecutors, remains at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

According to prosecutors, McDonald walked up to Lewis and a group of people standing outside, pulled a gun and started shooting. Lewis was shot multiple times, including in the chest. He was dropped off at Northwestern Memorial, where he later died, according to police.

In court Thursday, Judge Donald Panarese set bond at $2.5 million and set a preliminary hearing for Aug. 13 in Br. 66.

One man was killed and another hurt in a shooting on the Near North Side early Sunday.

The shooting occurred in the 500 block of West Pearson about 4 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

A 25-year-old man was dropped off at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound, where he later died, police said. He was identified as Donald Lewis, of the 2600 block of West 12th Place, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

A 23-year-old man was also shot in the leg and treated in good condition, also at Northwestern.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not yet known as Area Central detectives investigate. No one is in custody.
