Man gets 5 years for beating that led to 2013 death of his foster mother, Dorothy McGee, at their Kenwood home

A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for the death of his foster mother, Dorothy McGee, during a fight in their Kenwood neighborhood home in 2014.

Joshua David Brooks, 23, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter of a family member on May 17 after a bench trial before Judge Thomas Hennelly, according to Cook County court records.

Brooks was arguing with the 58-year-old McGee about 4 p.m. March 25, 2014, at their home in the 400 block of East 46th Street, authorities said at the time.

The argument became physical and Brooks pushed McGee to the ground and began hitting her in the face, authorities said.

McGee suffered a cardiac event during the incident and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she died less than an hour later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy found she died of heart disease, with diabetes, obesity and stress from the altercation as contributing factors, according to the medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Brooks ran away from the home, but was arrested a short time later at a neighbor’s apartment, according to police.

Judge Hennelly sentenced Brooks to five years in prison Wednesday, according to court records. He will receive credit for 896 days served in the Cook County Jail, and must serve one year of supervised release.

Joshua David Brooks has been ordered held without bond after being charged with the murder of his foster mother Dorothy McGee who died from a cardiac event during a domestic struggle.

Brooks, 21, was arguing with McGee about 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of East 46th Street, according to a statement from police.

The argument became physical and Brooks pushed the 58-year-old McGee to the ground and began hitting her in the face, police said.

McGee suffered a cardiac event during the incident, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

McGee, who lived on the block where the incident took place, died at University of Chicago Medical Center at 4:56 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Thursday determined McGee died of heart disease, with diabetes, obesity and stress from an altercation as contributing factors, according to the medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Brooks, also of the 400 block of East 46th Street, ran away but was arrested at a neighbor’s apartment, according to police.

He was charged with three counts of murder and a single count of unlawful restraint, police said.

Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Brooks held without bond Friday, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office. He will next appear in court April 15.

Joshua David Brooks has been charged with first-degree murder for the death of Dorothy McGee after a domestic incident in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

Brooks, 21, was arguing with McGee, who was his foster mother, about 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of East 46th Street, according to a statement from police News Affairs.

The argument became physical and Brooks pushed the 58-year-old McGee to the ground and began hitting her in the face, police said.

McGee then suffered a cardiac event during the incident, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

McGee, who lived on the block where the incident took place, died at University of Chicago Medical Center at 4:56 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
