WEEK IN REVIEW: At least 5 dead in Chicago violence

Despite a dramatic reduction in homicides in Chicago so far in March, another 5 people died from violence in the city last week.

As of March 30, there had been 28 homicides in March, and while that may seem high, it follows a February in which at least 48 people were slain, and a January that saw 53 homicides, according to Chicago SUn-Times records.

There have been at least 129 homicides this year, and while the city was keeping pace with last year's numbers, it has now fallen behind 2016, during which 149 people had been slain in the same time period.

Last week's victim included a 14-year-old boy, shot to death Saturday afternoon in Austin on the West Side; and a 22-year-old man known as an outstanding athlete in the Far South Side Rosemoor neighborhood, who died Wednesday, five days after being shot in the neighborhood where he live..

The teen, Laquan Allen, was on the sidewalk in the 4900 block of West Hubbard just after 3 p.m. when someone fired shots from a passing vehicle, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:34 p.m., according to authorities.

A resident of the West Humboldt Park neighborhood, Laquan had survived another shooting, just over a year earlier, family members said.

Twenty-two-year-old man Cedric Adkins-Malone died Wednesday afternoon, five days after he was shot while working on his car about 2:15 p.m. Friday, March 17, in the 10200 block of South Calumet, police and medical examiner's office said.

That's when someone appeared from a gangway across the street and opened fire, authorities said. Adkins-Malone suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:04 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said. He lived in the same neighborhood.

One person was killed and two others injured during a shooting early Sunday in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side. The group was in an apartment building vestibule about 1:40 a.m. in the 900 block of West 76th Street when they got into an argument with another group of people, according to police. During the argument, two males pulled guns and fired shots.
Tanisha Jackson, 30, was shot multiple times and was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:15 a.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office. A 29-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was taken in critical condition to Christ, police said. A 28-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the chest and refused medical attention.
A man was fatally shot Friday evening in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. Tomorry Hill, 20, was walking at 4:53 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Laflin Street when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He was shot multiple times and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 5:39 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Barrett, of the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood, was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he died at 5 p.m.

Man shot to death in Roseland identified as 24-year-old Jason Barrett

A man who was shot to death Monday afternoon in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side has been identified as 24-year-old Jason "Jrock" Barrett.

About 4:15 p.m., the 24-year-old Barrett was in the first block of East 113th Place when someone got out of a silver SUV and shot him in the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Barrett, of the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 5 p.m., authorities said.

No one was in custody for the shooting.
