WEEK IN REVIEW: At least 15 killed, including woman shot by cousin, man stabbed by friend while doing drugs

At least 15 died in Chicago violence last week, including a woman shot to death by her cousin as the two women argued over the Far South Side apartment they shared being too mess, and a man stabbed to death by a friend as they did drugs on the South Side.

The week's killing pushed the city's homicide total past the 600 mark for the year, with the Chicago Sun-Times Wire counting 611 as of Sunday night.

The domestic slaying happened Tuesday evening in the Eden Green neighborhood; and led to Tiera Graves, 28, being charged with first-degree murder, according to Chicago Police.

Graves and her cousin, 21-year-old Marilyn Duffie, were arguing about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of East 130th Street when Graves shot Duffie in the chest, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Duffie was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead two hours later.

Prosecutors said the cousins were apparently arguing over the messy apartment they shared, and over Duffie's conduct around Graves' child. Graves was ordered held on a $1 million bond.

In the other murder involving acquaintances, a 37-year-old was charged with fatally stabbing another man inside a Woodlawn neighborhood apartment where they were doing drugs with the victim's girlfriend Sunday morning, according to prosecutors. About 8:15 a.m., Jacob Shelton got into an argument with 45-year-old Lucius Delaney inside the older man’s home in the 6600 block of South Vernon, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Shelton used a knife to stab Delaney in the chest, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The attack stemmed from a domestic fight, police said. Shelton was arrested after the stabbing and faces first-degree murder charges. He is being held on a $2 million bond.
In the week's final homicide, a northwest Indiana man died Sunday afternoon, after being shot multiple times Saturday night in Gresham. Taiwan Fox, 18, was found unresponsive about 11:40 p.m. on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of West 81st Street with gunshot wounds to the back, neck and groin, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Fox, of Gary, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 3:44 p.m. Sunday.
A man was found shot to death earlier Sunday in Little Village. Just before 5 a.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired found 29-year-old Jason Balboa lying on the ground in the 2800 block of South Pulaski, according to authorities. Balboa had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and torso, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about four hours later.
A man was fatally shot early Sunday morning in the Lawndale neighborhood. Officers responding about 3:05 a.m. to a call of a person shot in the 2400 block of West Lexington found the 23-year-old man lying on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds to the back, according to police. Rashad Xavier Collins-Baker was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Another man was shot to death in Lawndale just about an hour earlier, police said. About 2:10 a.m., officers saw shots fired in the 1500 block of South Christiana, where a man was shot in the chest. Isaiah Hurley, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Officers spotted several people leaving the scene of the shooting and a foot pursuit ensued, police said. Two people were taken into custody, but they were released without charges being filed.

A 27-year-old man was shot to death early Sunday in Rogers Park. Jonathan Sanchez walked out of the back door of his apartment in the 7300 block of North Sheridan, and when he returned at 1:50 a.m., he told friends that he’d been shot, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Sanchez was shot in the back, and was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead two hours later. An autopsy found he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
A man was shot to death Saturday morning in the Little Village neighborhood. Giovanni Galvan, 20, was standing on the sidewalk about 10:15 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 24th when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired at him, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The vehicle then drove away. Galvan was shot in the chest, abdomen, back and arm; and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A 37-year-old man was found shot to death early Saturday in a West Garfield Park alley. Officers discovered Sentwali Davis with multiple gunshot wounds to the head about 1:40 a.m. in the 4200 block of West Wilcox, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man was fatally shot Wednesday evening in Bronzeville. Christopher Walters, 24, was shot in the shoulder and leg at 6:54 p.m. in the 4700 block of South Prairie, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Walters was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A 39-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday evening in Back of the Yards. Alejandro Morales was shot in the right side of the torso at 7:23 p.m. in the 4300 block of South Paulina, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Morales was taken to University of Illinois Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A 22-year-old man was shot to death Tuesday afternoon in East Side. Luis Romero was outside in the 9400 block of South Ewing about 4:45 p.m. when he heard shots and realized he’d been hit in the chest, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Romero was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about two hours later.
A man was shot to death Tuesday morning in West Pullman. Jamar Robinson, 23, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest at 6:58 a.m. in the 700 block of West 117th Place, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Robinson, a Harvey resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man was shot to death Monday night in Englewood. About 10:40 p.m., 24-year-old Ronald McBee was involved in a fight over a gun with another male in the 7300 block of South Morgan. The other person eventually gained control of the weapon and opened fire, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. McBee suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
Timothy Agnew was killed and four other people, including a 13-year-old boy, were seriously wounded in a West Englewood shooting Monday night on a South Side block that was the scene of a similar mass shooting just over a year earlier. The group was standing in the front yard of a home at 8:50 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Winchester when another group walked up and started shooting, according to police.
Agnew, 28, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:18 p.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office. A 13-year-old boy suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the right thigh and was taken in critical condition to Comer Children’s Hospital.

A 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the left leg; and a 30-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the left leg and buttocks, were both taken to Stroger Hospital, according to police. Their conditions were stabilized. The fifth victim, a 34-year-old man, was shot in the right leg, right hand and shoulder, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

In August 2015, four men were wounded in a shooting on the same block, the Sun-Times Wire reported. And less than a week later, two teenage boys were shot on the same block. None of those victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
A 25-year-old man died about 15 hours after he was shot Sunday night in the Uptown neighborhood on the North Side. Gregory Dion Tucker Jr. was driving south in the 4500 block of North Hazel at 8:35 p.m. when someone fired shots, striking him in the head, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Tucker was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:41 a.m. Monday, according to a family member.

A northwest Indiana man died after he was shot multiple times Saturday night in the Gresham neighborhood. Taiwan Fox, 18, was found unresponsive about 11:40 p.m. on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of West 81st Street with gunshot wounds to the back, neck and groin, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Fox, of Gary, Indiana, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 3:44 p.m. Sunday, according to authorities.

A 37-year-old man has been charged with fatally stabbing another man inside a Woodlawn neighborhood apartment Sunday morning. A man was found shot to death early Sunday in Little Village. Just before 5 a.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired found 29-year-old Jason Balboa lying on the ground in the 2800 block of South Pulaski, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Balboa suffered gunshot wounds to the head and torso, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:28 a.m.

A man was fatally shot early Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood. Officers responding about 3:05 a.m. to a call of a person shot in the 2400 block of West Lexington found the 23-year-old man lying on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds to the back, according to police.

Even unseasonably cold weather didn't stop the violence last week in Chicago, where at least 11 people were fatally shot and another man was stabbed to death. A 13th fatality, also linked to gun violence, was a man who died six years after being shot on the West Side.

The latest fatality was man found shot to death Sunday morning in the Marquette Park neighborhood. Officers responding about 11:25 a.m. to a call of a person on the ground found 18-year-old Dennis Bradford III unresponsive in the 6500 block of South Fairfield, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Bradford, who lived in the 6200 block of South Mozart, had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and wrist, and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

A 28-year-old man died Sunday morning after being dropped off at a Far South Side hospital with a gunshot wound to the left hip, according to police.

Marcus Smith arrived at 4:51 a.m. at Roseland Community Hospital at 45 W. 111th St. with a gunshot wound to the torso, according to police and the pmedical examiner's office. Smith, of the 2200 block of Spaulding Avenue in Dixmoor, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:05 a.m.

Police are trying to determine where the shooting happened as part of the the homicide investigation.

A 23-year-old woman died Saturday afternoon, about a day after being shot in the head in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Lauren Membreno was in the front seat of a parked vehicle about 7 p.m. Friday in the 5500 block of South Karlov when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Membreno—who wasn’t the intended target—was shot in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. A police source said her boyfriend, who was sitting in the driver's seat, was thought to have been the intended target.

A 65-year-old man was found stabbed to death inside a vehicle early Friday in Belmont Cragin on the Northwest Side. Ramon Ramirez was found unresponsive at 1:02 a.m. in the 5700 block of West Grand Avenue, police and the medical examiner’s office said.

Ramirez, a Mexican immigrant and 40-year city resident, lived on the same block where he died, died from a stab wound to the leg, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office. His family believes he was killed during a robbery.

A man was shot to death a block from his Austin neighborhood home late Thursday. Officers were called to the 4700 block of West Huron about 11:50 p.m. and found Jonathan B. Sanchez, 23, lying on the sidewalk, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Sanchez, of the 4600 block of West Huron, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. On Saturday, Decorian Collins, 22; and Lamar Williams, 24, were charged with first-degree murder for shooting Sanchez, according to police. Collins is being held on $1 million and bond was denied for Williams.

Eighteen-year-old Diangelo Black died Saturday night, two days after being critically injured in a Humboldt Park shooting that also claimed the life of 23-year-old Deandre Trotter.

Trotter and Black were standing in the 3400 block of West Chicago at 3:26 p.m. Thursday when two males dressed all in black ran up, opened fire and ran away, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Both men suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were taken to Stroger Hospital.

Trotter was pronounced dead at 4:02 p.m. that day, while Black died at 9:13 p.m. Saturday.

Marvin Lee was shot to death early Thursday outside a bar in Chatham neighborhood. Lee, 30, was inside Murphy's Lounge in the 7600 block of South Cottage Grove about 2:40 a.m. when he got into an argument with two other men, according to authorities and witnesses.

The argument spilled out onto the street, at which point one of the men pulled a gun and shot Lee in the head, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Lee, of the 6100 block of South Michigan Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:52 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

A witness said the fight started, and cooled off, inside, and Lee was going over to apologize to the others involved when he was shot.

A man was shot to death Wednesday morning in the North Lawndale neighborhood. Gerwancey Rambus, 40, was sitting in a vehicle in the 1100 block of South Richmond at 11:27 a.m. when someone approached and fired shots, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Rambus was shot multiple times in the chest, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. He lived about two blocks away in the 1100 block of South Mozart.

A man was shot to death early Wednesday outside a restaurant in Austin. Aurelio Guzman, 32, suffered multiple gunshot wounds about 1:45 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Madison, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

Guzman, of the 2200 block of North Laverne, was pronounced dead at the scene outside the Whale Fish Shrimp & Chicken restaurant. Witnesses told investigators that another male walked up to the victim and opened fire, then ran away.

A woman was found shot to death in her Avalon Park neighborhood apartment Tuesday night after what may have been a domestic incident. Officers responding about 7:35 p.m. to a call for a well-being check in the 1700 block of East 85th Place found 35-year-old Babette Miller unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

A family member called police when they hadn’t heard from the woman, according to a police source. Miller, who lived in the apartment, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, but it may have been domestic-related, police said.

A 17-year-old boy died after being shot Monday afternoon in the Norwood Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The shooting happened about 1:15 p.m. in a parking lot behind a strip mall in the 5500 block of North Harlem about 1:15 p.m., according to police.

Anthony Heatherly was shot in the chest and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he later died, according to police, who said the shooting may have resulted from a drug deal gone bad. A neighbor said the shooting didn't happen in the parking lot, butthe teen was dumped from a car in the parking lot.

Another man died last week of wounds suffered six years ago when he was shot in Austin. Trayon Carson, 38, died at Norwegian American Hospital on Wednesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

He was shot on April 27, 2010, in the 1600 block of North Menard Avenue, according to police. An autopsy found he died of complications from those gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Two men were charged with the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jonathan B. Sanchez last week in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Decorian Collins, 22; and Lamar Williams, 24, are both charged with first-degree murder for shooting Sanchez, according to Chicago Police.

About 11:50 p.m. Thursday, officers found Sanchez lying on the sidewalk in the 4700 block of West Huron with a gunshot wound to the head, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Collins, of the 400 block of North Long, was ordered held on a $1 million bond Sunday, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.

Williams, who lives in the 4600 block of West Erie, had previously been charged with domestic battery in March, and was ordered held without bond Sunday.

Collins is next scheduled to appear in court Monday, while Williams is scheduled for a Tuesday hearing.

Jonathan Sanchez found fatally shot just a block from his home in Austin

Jonathan Sanchez was shot to death just a block from his Austin neighborhood home on the West Side late Thursday.

Officers were called to the 4700 block of West Huron about 11:50 p.m., and found Sanchez, 23, lying on the sidewalk, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Sanchez, of the 4600 block of West Huron, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Family members said he was walking home from work when he was shot.

Friends have started a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
