Toriella was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she died at 6:42 a.m., according to Chicago Police and the medical examiner’s office.</p> <p>An autopsy Sunday found the girl died of blunt force injuries of the head from an assault, and the death was ruled a homicide.</p> <p>The Illinois Department of Child and Family Services said it was investigating the girl's death, along with police.</p> <p>In other homicides last week:</p> <ul> <li>A 30-year-old man was shot to death Sunday evening in the West Side Austin neighborhood. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/oscar-carter/">Oscar Carter</a> was standing outside of a vehicle at 7:26 p.m. in the 1300 block of North Mason when a vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots, according to police and the medical examiner's office. He was struck multiple times in the chest, and the vehicle drove off after the shooting, authorities said. Carter, of the West Garfield Park neighborhood, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died 30 minutes later.</li> </ul> <p><span id="more-28775"></span></p> <ul> <li>Two men were shot to death Saturday morning in the Pilsen neighborhood on the Near West Side, authorities said. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/alexis-salgado/">Alexis Salgado</a>, 20, and <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/manuel-mendoza/">Manuel Mendoza</a>, 18, were driving about 10:50 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Throop when they flashed a gun at someone standing on the street, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The person on the street pulled out their own gun and fired shots into the vehicle, striking both men, police said. Salgado suffered a gunshot wound to his body and tried to get out of the vehicle, but collapsed, authorities said. Mendoza, a Little Village resident, was shot in the neck. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The shooter was not in custody.</li> <li>A 17-year-old boy was shot to death Friday evening in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. The teen was found unresponsive by officers about 4:45 p.m. in the 800 block of East 83rd Street, according to police. He suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died an hour later, police and the medical examiner’s office said. The medical examiner’s office identified the victim as <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/semaj-l-berry/">Semaj L. Berry</a>. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the chest. He lived Greater Grand Crossing.</li> <li>A 22-year-old man was shot to death Friday afternoon in the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/ian-ashford/">Ian Ashford</a> was in a vehicle about 2:10 p.m. in the 4600 block of North Central Park Avenue when someone on foot fired at him, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Ashford was shot in the chest and was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead minutes later.</li> <li>The death of a man found unresponsive Friday afternoon in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side was ruled a homicide. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/reynaldo-trevino/">Reynaldo Trevino</a>, 47, was found with a large wound to the leg about 1 p.m. in the 5800 block of South Sawyer, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Trevino, a Brighton Park resident, was dead at the scene. An autopsy Friday did not immediately rule on cause and manner of death, but the medical examiner's office later said he died of a gunshot wound to the right lower leg.</li> <li>A man was shot and killed Friday afternoon in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/adonis-l-johnson/">Adonis L. Johnson</a>, 25, was walking about 1:15 p.m. in the 3200 block of West Maypole when someone inside a dark-colored vehicle fired shots, striking him in the head and chest, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Johnson was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.</li> <li>A woman who shot a man after he stabbed her multiple times Thursday afternoon in Lawndale acted in self-defense and will not be charged, police said. About 4:05 p.m., the 25-year-old man was shot in the chest after he stabbed a 25-year-old woman multiple times in his home the 4000 block of West 21st Street. The woman was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/pleasure-cardell-singleton-jr/">Pleasure Cardell Singleton Jr</a>. The stabbing was believed to be a domestic incident, police said, but the nature of the relationship between the two wasn’t released. Charges against the woman were rejected when the shooting was ruled self-defense, police said Saturday.</li> <li>A 33-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday night in the West Side Austin neighborhood. About 6:45 p.m., <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/antonio-moore/">Antonio Moore</a> was shot multiple times by a person on foot in the 1400 block of North Leclaire Avenue, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Moore, who lived on the same block, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 7:25 p.m. The shooter ran toward the 1300 block of North Laramie and was pursued by officers to La Follette Park, where a weapon was recovered. Officers searched the park’s field house for the suspect with a K-9 unit, but the suspect was not found. At the time, programming was in progress at the park’s field house, including use of the fitness center, Junior Bear programming, boxing, open gym and swimming, according to the Chicago Park District.</li> <li>A man killed in a shooting in the West Side Austin neighborhood was identified as a Northwest Side resident. Officers responded at 6:13 p.m. Wednesday to a call of shots fired in the 1000 block of North Long and found 43-year-old <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/brian-keith-cheek/">Brian Keith Cheek</a> unresponsive in a gangway, police and the medical examiner's office said. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. Cheek lived in the Galewood neighborhood.</li> <li>A man was fatally shot Tuesday night in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/anthony-d-henry/">Anthony D. Henry</a>, 31, was standing with a group of people at 10:12 p.m. in the 7000 block of South Carpenter when someone walked up and began shooting, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Henry, who lived in the neighborhood, was struck in the back and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.</li> <li>A Mount Greenwood neighborhood man was shot to death Tuesday afternoon in the McKinley Park neighborhood on the South Side. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/patrick-james-stegmueller-jr/">Patrick James Stegmueller Jr.</a> was walking about 12:15 p.m. in the 3300 block of South Damen when someone shot him in the neck from a passing green SUV, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The 35-year-old Stegmueller was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died about 30 minutes later.</li> <li>A man was found shot to death Monday morning in the West Side Austin neighborhood. <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/lloyd-westbrook/">Lloyd Westbrook</a>, 22, was found with an apparent gunshot wound in a gangway in the 100 block of North Long, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The shooting is thought to have happened late Sunday, but Westbrook, who lived a few blocks away, was not found until just before 10 a.m. Monday.
