Far South Side resident Rodney Winters dies of injuries suffered in a shooting 30 years ago

It took 30 years for a gunshot wound to kill Rodney Winters, so long that neither police nor the medical examiner's office could say exactly when or where he was shot.

The 63-year-old Far South Side resident died in his Pullman neighborhood home, and the death was ruled a homicide, though the shooting took place decades ago.

Winters died at 12:45 p.m. June 20 in his home in the 900 block of East 104th Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy did not immediately rule on his cause and manner of death, but has since found that he died of complications from a remote gunshot wound. His death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Winters was shot about 30 years ago, according to a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office.

Chicago Police did not have information on the shooting and said there was was an open death investigation in the case.
