Marsharra Tate charged with murder in shooting death of Summer Moore

A second man has been charged with murder in the May shooting death of Summer Moore, a mother of three killed outside a family party in the Morgan Park community.

Marsharra Tate, 19, was was also charged with one count each of attempted murder and and aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said. He is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Sunday.

Tate, of the 8300 block of South Saginaw Avenue, was identified as the man who shot Moore in the 11400 block of South Aberdeen Street May 9, authorities said.

Moore, 37, was attending a party to celebrate a teenage relative’s prom send-off when she was shot in the chest, her family said. Police said she was not the intended target.

In late June, Johnny Reese, 23, was charged in the murder for his alleged role in the slaying.

Prosecutors said Reese was saw a man with whom he had an ongoing dispute get into the passenger’s seat of a car near South Aberdeen Street and West 113th Place.

Reese and another person then got into a Chevrolet Suburban, drove a half block south and the passenger exited and opened fire, prosecutors said.

At least one bullet struck Moore, of the 3100 block of West Marquette Road, who later died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said.

Tate is scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing on Sunday. Reese is being held on $1 million bond.

Johnny Reese drove a gunman to shoot another man as part of an ongoing dispute, prosecutors said. The bullet instead struck a 37-year-old mother of three attending a nearby party on Mother’s Day weekend.

Reese, 23, was outside near South Aberdeen Street and West 113th Place when he saw a 27-year-old man with whom he had an ongoing dispute get into the passenger’s seat of a car about 7:50 p.m. May 9, said Assistant State’s Attorney Alex Molesky.

Reese and another person then got into a Chevrolet Suburban, which Reese drove a short distance to block the intersection, Molesky said. The other person then got out of the SUV and opened fire on the car, she said.

At least one of the bullets struck 37-year-old Summer Moore as she was walking near a front yard in the 11400 block of South Aberdeen Street, authorities said. Family members said she was attending a party to celebrate a teenage relative’s prom send-off when the gunshots rang out.

Moore, of the 3100 block of West Marquette Road, was shot in the chest and died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

“We heard gunshots, and we started to run,” Moore’s cousin, Chant’e Moore, said after the shooting. “We all was running towards the house. People were falling over one another.”

The 22-year-old driver of the car attempted to flee in reverse, but crashed into a parked car, Molesky said.

Reese and the gunman fled, but the shooting was captured on video surveillance, Molesky said. Reese was later identified by eyewitnesses as the driver, she said.

Reese, of the 11400 block of South Union Avenue, was still charged with two counts each of murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said. The gunman has not been charged as of Thursday afternoon, but source said he was being questioned by detectives.

On Monday, Reese appeared in court dressed in a black T-shirt and black shorts. Judge Laura Sullivan ordered him held on $1 million bond.

Reese was convicted of a misdemeanor gun charge in 2008 and a misdemeanor cannabis charge in 2011.

Reese has a 2-year-old child and works as a Tribune deliveryman, his lawyer said.

He will be back in court July 18.

Summer Moore was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in the Morgan Park neighborhood. Reader "Kita" posted this about the shooting:

First off it was my daughter prom send off and my moms house,That was my cousin who life was taken by some idiot trying to shoot someone else and those bullets was not intended for my family!! Neither one of us is in a gang and she was a innocent victim!!! Whatever was said in the time of grief at the hospital has nothing to do with her being in a gang! Those was ppl dealing with a sad tragedy that had just took place, She was a wonderful,beautiful,loving Mother,sister,cousin,friend inside and out and she didn't deserve this! I pray for your ignorance because clearly you don't know any better,Everybody ain't gangbangers and even if she did know ppl who was it don't make her a target

Six men and two women were fatally shot in Chicago last week.

Four of the murders happened over the weekend, when 18 other people were wounded by gunfire, authorities said.

The most recent murder happened when 15-year-old Vaughn Holeman was fatally shot about 3:40 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of West 116th Street, authorities said. Detectives are questioning a juvenile for Holeman's murder, police said.

Holeman, of the 400 block of West 115th Street, died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn less than an hour later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

On Saturday, 25-year-old Xavier Tripp was walking on a sidewalk in the 4100 block of West Adams Street when a vehicle pulled up and at least one person got out and shot him about 1:35 p.m., authorities said.

Tripp, of the 1500 block of North Long Avenue, died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

In the Little Village neighborhood, 34-year-old Cesar Nieves was fatally shot in the 4100 block of West 28th Street at 3:24 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

Nieves, of the 2800 block of South Kedvale Avenue, was dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office.

On Friday, Summer Moore was shot and killed in the 11400 block of South Aberdeen Street, apparently by a bullet meant for someone else, according to the police and relatives.

The 37-year-old mother of three and other relatives had gathered at an aunt’s home in Morgan Park to celebrate a teenage relative’s prom send-off, family said. Moore, of the 3100 block of West Marquette Road, was shot in the chest and died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said.

In the Calumet Heights neighborhood, 22-year-old William Lomax was fatally shot while traveling in a car in the 9300 block of South Stony Island Avenue about 11:40 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

Lomax, of the 10000 block of South Yates Avenue, was driven to a restaurant in the 8800 block of South Stony Island Avenue, where emergency crews took him to Stroger Hospital, authorities said. He died about an hour later.

On Tuesday, 18-year-old Jajuan Porter was shot dead in the 7900 block of South Vincennes Avenue, authorities said. A 26-year-old man was also wounded in the shooting.

Family said Porter was inside a restaurant when he was shot. Emergency crews found Porter, of the 600 block of East 131 Street, dead on the street, authorities said.

On the West Side, 20-year-old Chasteddy Blocker was shot in the 1500 block of South Central Park Avenue about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said. A 34-year-old man was also wounded in the shooting.

Blocker, 20, who lived on the block, was shot in the back and died at Mount Sinai Hospital a short time later, authorities said.

The killings started about 7:30 p.m. Monday when 29-year-old Gerlad Calhoun and a 35-year-old man were shot while riding in a vehicle near South Morgan and West 59th streets, authorities said.

Calhoun, of the 700 block of West 59th Street, died from a gunshot wound to the chest less than an hour later at Stroger Hospital, authorities said.

Nobody has been charged in any of the murders.

Overall, the medical examiner’s office has ruled at least 125 Chicago deaths in 2014 a homicide — including six people killed by police.

Additionally, the state’s attorney’s office filed first-degree murder charges against a speeding motorist who killed an off-duty police officer while trying to flee police even though the autopsy ruled the death an accident.

Chicago Police, which counts murders different, have ruled at least eight of the homicides as involuntary manslaughter, justified self-defense or accidents.

Summer Moore was planning to celebrate Mother’s Day with a family barbecue.

Friday night, just before 8 p.m., the 37-year-old mother of three was shot and killed in the 11400 block of South Aberdeen Street, apparently by a bullet meant for someone else, according to the police and relatives.

“We really need to end this gun violence in the city of Chicago because innocent people are getting shot,” said Moore’s cousin, Chant’e Moore.

Moore, her cousin and other relatives had gathered at an aunt’s home in Morgan Park to celebrate a teenage relative’s prom send-off. After the party, people were cleaning up, said Moore’s aunt Aretha Cummings, who lives in the home where the party took place.

Summer Moore and Chant’e Moore were still in the yard, about to leave, Chant’e Moore said.

“We heard gunshots, and we started to run,” said Chant’e Moore, 36. “We all was running towards the house. People were falling over one another.”

Then, Summer Moore “just hit the ground,” her cousin said, “We thought she had just tripped or something.”

Summer Moore, of the 3100 block of West Marquette Road, was shot in the chest. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead.

“It’s not believed she was the intended target in this incident,” Officer Jose Estrada. “However, we still don’t have much more detail on who exactly that target was or what exactly happened.”

No one was in custody Saturday.

Cummings, Moore’s aunt, urged the shooter to come forward.

“It’s a tragedy. It’s a mistake” the 46-year-old said.

Summer Moore was a single mom to three kids — two teenagers and an adult son. She attended Malcom X College, where she was studying to be a surgical techniciann.

“She was a greatest loving mother, not just to her children but to everyone’s children,” Chant’e Moore said.

Moore attempted to run away but was struck in the chest, authorities said.

Moore, of the 3100 block of West Marquette Road, died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 8:38 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Nobody has been charged in the murder.

Area South detectives are investigating.
