Reginald Duckworth sentenced to prison for fatally stabbing Willie Wilson at South Shore party

A Maywood man was sentenced to nearly two decades in prison Friday after he pleaded guilty to stabbing his cousin to death after a South Shore birthday party.

Reginald Duckworth, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and Judge Clayton Crane sentenced him to 19 years in prison, according to court records.

Duckworth was part of a group of people that attended a birthday party at his cousin Willie Wilson’s home in the 2500 block of East 73rd Place on Jan. 26, 2013, prosecutors said.

After the party, Duckworth asked a woman for money multiple times. Wilson, 32, told Duckworth to stop and the two got into an argument in the basement, prosecutors said.

The argument turned physical and Duckworth punched Wilson, prosecutors said. Witnesses tried to break up the fight, but Duckworth resisted and pushed an arthritic 60-year-old man to the ground before throwing Wilson over a table and stabbing him multiple times, prosecutors said.

Wilson told another person in the basement that Duckworth stabbed him. Witnesses saw Duckworth run away with a knife in his hand, and Wilson died at the scene, authorities said.

Duckworth, of the 1700 block of West Madison in Maywood, was also recommended for drug treatment as part of his sentence, according to court records. He will receive credit for 664 days spent in the Cook County Jail.

A Maywood man accused of fatally stabbing his cousin following a South Shore birthday party was ordered held on $1 million bond Tuesday.

Reginald Duckworth, 22, is accused of fatally stabbing his cousin, 32-year-old Willie Wilson, about 11:50 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

Duckworth was part of a group of people that attended a birthday party at Wilson’s home in the 2500 block of East 73rd Sun Place, according to court documents. After the party, Duckworth asked a woman for money multiple times.

Wilson told Duckworth to stop asking for money and the two got into an argument in the basement, according to court documents. The argument turned physical and Duckworth punched Wilson.

Witnesses tried to break up the fight but Duckworth resisted, pushing an arthritic 60-year-old man to the ground, before throwing Wilson over a table and stabbing him multiple times, court documents said.

Wilson was declared dead at the scene at 11:55 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Duckworth, of the 1700 block of West Madison Street in Maywood, was charged with first-degree murder, authorities said. On Tuesday, Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered Duckworth held on $1 million bond.

A west suburban man has been charged with murder for fatally stabbing his cousin late Saturday at a family gathering at a home in the South Shore neighborhood.

Reginald Duckworth, 22, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 11:50 p.m. stabbing in the 2500 block of East 73rd Street, according to police News Affairs.

The stabbing happened at the home of the victim, 32-year-old Willie Wilson, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

A police source said the men were cousins.

Wilson and the suspect got into an argument during a family gathering at the home, according to a source. The argument escalated into a physical argument, during which the suspect allegedly stabbed Wilson twice, the source said.

Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:55 p.m. from a stab wound to the chest, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Duckworth, of the 1700 block of West Madison Street in Maywood, fled but was picked up by police Sunday morning.

Court information for Duckworth was not immediately available Monday evening.
