Phillip Floro fatally shot while walking with friend in Austin


Phillip Floro was walking with a friend Sunday evening when he was shot to death in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 8:20 p.m., the 37-year-old Floro was walking in the 1600 block of North Central when he heard a shot and realized he’d been struck in the abdomen, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Floro, of the 3000 block of West Franklin, was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he died at 9:16 p.m., authorities said.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

Former Bogan High star Deionte Harris fatally shot in Auburn Gresham


Last season, Deionte D. Harris helped lead Bogan High School to the city championship; Sunday morning, he was fatally shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

Harris, 18, was shot in the face and thigh in the 8400 block of South Hermitage at 10:35 a.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Harris, of the 8200 block of South Bishop, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 11:05 a.m., authorities said.

Man charged with August murder of Hughvon Polk in Humboldt Park

A man has been charged with the August shooting that left Hughvon Polk dead and another man wounded in Humboldt Park.

Patrick Holmes, 26, faces first-degree murder charges for the attack that happened about 8:20 p.m. Aug. 24 in the 1200 block of North Keeler, according to Chicago Police.

Polk, 24 was driving a red van with a 21-year-old man in the passenger seat when someone opened fire from a sidewalk, authorities said at the time.

Polk was shot in the chest and arm, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 2800 block of West Flournoy.

The younger man was shot in the left hand and suffered a graze wound to his left arm, police said.

Holmes, of the 1400 block of South Canal, was arrested Thursday, police said.

A judge on Saturday ordered him held without bond, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. He is due back in court Monday.

14-year-old Tyjuan Poindexter fatally shot in Kenwood drive-by


Fourteen-year-old Tyjuan Poindexter was shot to death and another teenage boy was injured in a drive-by shooting Saturday night in Kenwood.

The teens were outside in the 4400 block of South Greenwood at 7:30 p.m. when a car drove by and someone inside started shooting, according to Chicago Police.

Poindexter, of the 1200 block of East 46th Street, was shot in the head and died at the scene at 8:01 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The 15-year-old suffered two leg wounds and was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.

Witnesses told police there was an altercation in a nearby park before the shooting, but it is unclear if the altercation was related to the attack.

28-year-old John Davis fatally shot in Austin


John Davis was shot to death Thursday night in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

Davis, 28, was standing with a group of people in the 200 block of South Laramie about 8:40 p.m. when two people jumped out of a white van and shot him, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Davis, of the 5300 block of West Ohio, was shot in the back, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

Joshua Rodriguez charged with fatal shooting of Mikal Malik Johnson in Logan Square in April

A man has been charged with the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Mikal Malik Johnson in the Northwest Side Logan Square neighborhood last April.

Joshua Rodriguez, 23, faces one count of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting on April 8, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Johnson was in a car driven by a friend in the 2700 block of West Bloomingdale about 2:50 a.m. when they ran into Rodriguez, who was in the backseat of another car, prosecutors said. They got into an argument, and Rodriguez and his friend began following Johnson’s car.

John Buckner, police department employee, fatally shot while unloading groceries in Morgan Park

John W. Buckner, a civilian employee of the Chicago Police Department, was killed in a shooting Wednesday night in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Buckner, 59, was unloading groceries from his car near his home in the 11500 block of South Church about 8:45 p.m. when three males rode by on bicycles and opened fire along the block, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Buckner was shot in the abdomen, and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was died at 10:25 p.m., authorities said.

Buckner was a civilian employee of the CPD, assigned to the general support division, according to police. He had worked for the department for 25 years.

Another man, 41, was standing on a front porch on the same block when he was struck by gunfire. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, police said. Buckner and the man weren’t together at the time of the shooting and were randomly struck by the shots, police said.

Police said neither man was the intended victim of the shooting. Area South detectives are investigating.

Albert Gonzalez found shot to death inside his South Chicago home


Albert Gonzalez was found shot to death early Tuesday in his South Chicago neighborhood home.

Gonzalez, 48, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the neck in his home in the 8500 block of South Burley about 4:45 a.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy on Wednesday showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.

Area South detectives are investigating.

17-year-old Armonni Nelson fatally shot when he answers door in his Calumet Heights home


Armonni Nelson, a 17-year-old South Side boy, was shot to death Wednesday morning in his Calumet Heights home.

Nelson was shot by a male suspect after he answered the door of his home in the 9100 block of South Yates Boulevard at 7:47 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was shot in the abdomen and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

Jarrell Lovelace dies two weeks after being shot while riding mini-bike in West Pullman


Jarrel Lovelace, who was shot two weeks ago in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, died Monday night.

Lovelace, 30, was riding a motorized mini-bike in the 11800 block of South State about 7 p.m. Aug. 31 when shots rang out, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Lovelace, of the 1200 block of West 110th Place, was shot in the abdomen and arm, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said.

He died there at at 11:33 p.m. Monday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Wednesday found he died of complications from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.
