A 63-year-old South Side man who prosecutors said shot his unarmed 50-year-old brother to death with a shotgun after the younger brother had asked him to be quiet Friday is being held without bail.
Larry Peters , 63, of the 5800 block of S. Shields, is charged with first-degree murder for the death of Ronald Peters , who a prosecutor said lived at the same address on a floor below his older brother.
Assistant State’s Attorney Terri Gleason said Ronald Peters was home with his 17-year-old daughter and shouted at LarryPeters to stop making noise. Gleason said Larry Peters came downstairs with a shotgun and Ronald Peters tried to take the gun away without success.
Gleason said Ronald Peters ’ daughter heard the men enter his living room, and she said the girl heard a shot and her father crying in pain.
No one else was in the living room, Gleason said.
She said Ronald Peters ran out the front door and crawled into the street bleeding badly from his side. She said a witness saw Larry Peters stand on the porch, reload the shotgun and walk over to his brother.
The unarmed Ronald Peters raised his hands to block his face, Gleason said, and Larry Peters raised the shotgun and fired it at his brother’s torso.
Gleason said Larry Peters walked to the backyard and dropped the gun but was detained within five minutes.
He told officers, “I just shot my brother and I want to turn myself in,” according to a police report. Gleason said he also told them where to find the gun.
Ronald Peters was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the police report.
