Officers on routine patrol near the South Shore neighborhood heard gunshots coming from the area near East 79th Street and South East End Avenue about 11:45 p.m., police said.
When they arrived at the location they discovered the woman lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head, police said.
The woman, 57-year-old Linda Williams, was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she died at 1:33 a.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
