A 19-year-old woman was killed Tuesday night when a gunman fired into a crowd in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.
The woman was identified as Ashley Hardmon, of the 4900 block of West Kammerling Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
She was standing outside in the 4800 block of West Potomac about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday when a shooter fired into a crowd, striking her in the head, Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
According to witnesses at the scene, several people were walking south on Lamon Avenue when they opened fire on the group the woman was standing with.
She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, Gaines said.
A woman who identified herself as the deceased’s mother declined to comment, only saying “It’s just got to stop. It’s just got to stop.”
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the death but could not provide additional details.
Area North detectives were investigating.
