A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot late Saturday by a friend of his girlfriend after the couple argued at a Woodlawn gathering.
Marquise Harris was in a second-floor apartment in the 6200 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue when got into an argument with his girlfriend about 11:20 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.
A male friend of the girlfriend intervened and got into a fight with Harris, authorities said. The friend left the gathering, but returned a short time later and allegedly shot Harris in the chest.
Harris, who lived on the block, died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 12:05 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The victim’s mother, Patricia Harris, told NBC Chicago the shooting occurred in their home and the gunman was a neighbor.
“He went to school every day like I told him to do, and if he did anything wrong, I would put him on punishment and take his games away from him … He was 16 years old and he never disrespected no grown person,” she said.
Area Central detectives are investigating.
