Eugene Matheny killed in West Garfield Park shooting

Eugene Matheny was killed and another man was critically wounded in a shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood Friday evening.

About 7:20 p.m., the two men, ages 52 and 53, were standing in the alley in the 4300 block of West Jackson Boulevard, when a maroon-colored minivan pulled up alongside them, police said.

A male in the van started talking to the two men, and eventually pulled out a handgun and opened fire, police said.

Matheny, 52, of the 4200 block of West Adams Street, was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The 53-year-old was shot in the upper left thigh and also taken to Mount Sinai, where he was listed in critical condition, police said

No one was in custody as Area North detectives investigated.
