James Sterling fatally shot his wife and wounded her sister before turning the gun on himself late Sunday during a domestic shooting in the Roseland community, authorities said.
Sterling got into an argument with his wife, 29-year-old Amy Holmes-Sterling, in the 400 block of West 104th Street and opened fire about 9:55 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
Sterling, who lived on the block, then turned the gun on himself, authorities said. The couple were declared dead on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which listed Holmes-Sterling residence as in the 300 block of East 53rd Street.
A Monday autopsy ruled Sterling’s death a suicide, according to the medical examiners’ office, which is scheduled to perform an autopsy on Holmes-Sterling Tuesday.
Holmes-Sterling’s sister, 26, was shot in the shoulder during the dispute and taken in to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.
Area South detectives are investigating.
