A 42-year-old man was fatally shot during an attempted robbery that prompted police to shoot one of the suspects late Thursday in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Police on patrol near the 7900 block of South Justine Street saw two robbers approach Tepete Davis and his acquaintance in an alley about 11:55 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.

The robbers shot both men and ran away when the officers approached. The officers gave chase and shot one of the suspected robbers when he turned and pointed a dark object at the officers, police said.

Davis, 42, was shot multiple times during the robbery and died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 1:08 a.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The other robbery victim was shot in the leg and was taken to Christ Medical Center in good condition, authorities said.

The suspect shot by police was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center, said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden. He has not been charged as of Saturday afternoon.

The other suspect ran away and was not in custody Saturday, police said.

No officers were injured during the pursuit, authorities said.

Area South detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating the shooting.
