Walter Velez was fatally shot in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood early Monday.
Velez, 26, was standing with friends in an alley in the 2100 block of North Merrimac Avenue when somebody walked up, yelled gang slogans and opened fire about 12:15 a.m. Monday, authorities.
Velez died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood hours later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which did not release his home address.
Nobody has been charged for the murder.
Area North detectives are investigating.
