Three men were each held on $1 million bond Tuesday in the shooting death of Nacurvie Smith early Sunday in the Old Town neighborhood.

Smith, 27, was driving behind a friend’s vehicle when the two pulled over near the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, said Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen Rogers.

While the two vehicles were stopped, a tan Buick pulled up approached and somebody inside opened fire, Rogers said.

Smith was shot several times and attempted to drive away, but crashed into several nearby parked vehicles, authorities said. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

Smith, of the 1200 block of North Cleveland Avenue, died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital less than an hour later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Witnesses saw the Buick drive away and provided a description to police, who stopped the vehicle on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) about 15 minutes later, authorities said.

Officers found Matthew Cobbs, 20, Eddie Simmons, 21, and Ahmad Walker, 18, inside the Buick, which had a .45 caliber handgun in plain view in the backseat, authorities said.

All three men were taken into custody and the Buick was taken to Area Central, where a 9 mm handgun was discovered in the rear floorboard. Ballistics testing matched both guns to shell casings recovered from the shooting, Rogers said.

Simmons, of the 3400 block of West 5th Avenue, Walker, of the 700 block of West 50th Place, and Cobbs, of the 2700 block of North Francisco Avenue, were each charged with first-degree murder, authorities said.

Cobb was convicted in 2013 of possession of a controlled substance, Rogers said. Cobb had attended Prairie State University and currently works as a flower deliveryman, according to his lawyer.

Walker is working on his GED and is currently working as a temp at a warehouse, his lawyer said.

Simmons graduated West Town Academy, where he played sports, according to his lawyer, who said Simmons is currently working in a warehouse and wanted to take teh firefighters exam in December.

On Tuesday, Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered all three men held on $1 million bond.
