A U.S. Postal Service employee was found shot to death inside a vehicle in the East Garfield Park neighborhood Tuesday morning.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 2800 block of West Warren Boulevard found the 27-year-old dead man inside a vehicle with apparent gunshot wounds about 6:35 a.m., police said.
USPS spokesman Mark Reynolds identified the man Anthony Hayes, a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier who worked out of the post office at 5001 W. Division St.,
“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the tragic killing of our co-worker Anthony Hayes,” according to a statement from the postal service. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony’s family, co-workers and friends.”
Sharon Winters told the Chicago Tribune that she heard the gunshots and later found her nephew dead inside the car after a neighbor called to tell her Hayes’ vehicle was still parked outside even though he was supposed to be at work.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but did not release additional details Tuesday morning.
Nobody has been charged for the killing.
Area North detectives are investigating.
