Death of 61-year-old Edward Maslon in Avondale fire ruled a homicide

The death of Edward Maslon, who was discovered injured during a fire in May in the Northwest Side Avondale neighborhood, has been ruled a homicide.

Maslon, 61, was found under the rubble in a second-floor living room of an apartment building in the 3900 block of West School Street as firefighters fought a blaze about 5:30 a.m. May 20, according to the Chicago Fire Department and Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy later found that Maslon, who had no known home address, died of blunt- and sharp-force injuries, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A fire official said at the time that Maslon had been hired to watch the two-unit apartment building as it underwent renovations.
