Hammood Dawoudi killed in Chatham shooting that left second man wounded

Hammood Dawoudi was killed and another man was wounded in a shooting inside an apartment in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side on Thursday night, police said.

Dawoudi, 23, and a 20-year-old were inside a basement apartment about 9:55 p.m. in the 7900 block of South State when someone knocked on the door and asked for the 20-year-old, officials said.

When the door was opened, the person outside fired several shots before running away northbound, police said.

Dawoudi suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 10:46 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The 20-year-old was shot in the leg and shoulder, and suffered a graze wound to the head, police said. He was also taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

Detectives are investigating whether the shootings were gang-related.
