Lynell Simmons killed, two others wounded in Chatham shooting


Lynell L. Simmons died and two other men were wounded in a Thursday afternoon shooting in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

The men were standing outside in the 7900 block of South Langley about 3:10 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said. That’s when a maroon van pulled up, and two men got out out and started firing.

Simmons, 30, was shot in the abdomen and and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:46 p.m., authorities said. Simmons lived in the 700 block of East 62nd Street, the medical examiner’s office said.

A 22-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the side, Zala said. A 38-year-old man was in “stable” condition at Stroger with gunshot wounds to the right arm and right foot.
