21-year-old Devone Matthews shot at Edgewater carwash where he worked

Devone Matthews was fatally shot at the carwash where he worked in the North Side Edgewater neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

About 4:45 p.m., a man entered the business in the 5900 block of North Ridge, pulled a handgun and fired several shots, police said.

The 21-year-old Matthews, of the 6100 block of North Damen, was shot in the back and taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Sources said he worked at the carwash where the shooting occurred.

Police described the shooter as a black man in his 20s, with dark complexion and hair in corn rows, wearing a white T-shirt, black hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and white gym shoes.

Detectives are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.
