Man charged with July slaying of Jovan Hopkins in Back of the Yards

A man has been charged with shooting Jovan Devontae Hopkins to death in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood in July.

Dequan Hopkins, 19, was charged with murder while committing another forcible felony, and aggravated discharge of a firearm for the shooting death of 22-year-old Jovan Hopkins, according to Chicago Police.

About 8:45 p.m. on July 9, Jovan Hopkins was walking in the 5200 block of South Emerald when Dequan Hopkins walked out of a gangway and opened fire, authorities said.

He then jumped in a vehicle, which sped away, police said.

Jovan Hopkins was shot in the upper body and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 9:33 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 4900 block of Walsh Avenue in East Chicago, Ind.

Dequan Hopkins, of the 5100 block of South Emerald, was ordered held without bond Sunday. He will next appear in court Monday.

Police did not say whether Jovan Hopkins and Dequan Hopkins were related.
