After being shot in Austin in June, Derrick Smith was left paralyzed until his injuries killed him on Monday, authorities said.

Smith, 28, was sitting in a vehicle in the 5200 block of West LeMoyne Street at 10 p.m. June 21 when someone walked up and shot him, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was shot several times and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Smith, of the 0-100 block of North Waller Avenue, was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. Monday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Tuesday found Smith died of pulmonary thromboembolism immobility due to paraplegia caused by multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.
