Person of interest released in fatal shooting of Rashad Stokes in Austin

A person who was being questioned by police after Rashad Stokes was shot to death early Monday in the West Side Austin neighborhood has been released.

Stokes, 29, was standing on the sidewalk in the 4800 block of West Madison about 1:30 a.m. when a male suspect walked up and fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Stokes, of the 5200 block of West Congress Parkway, suffered at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the face, and ruled his death a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A person of interest was being questioned in connection with the homicide Monday morning, but police said Wednesday that person had been released without charges.
