A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday evening at the scene where aspiring nurse Daysha Wright was fatally shot earlier in the day.
About 100 people gathered just east of the corner of Maypole and Hoyne on the Near West Side to mourn the loss of the 21-year-old.
Dozens of friends, neighbors and family members gathered with balloons, posters and photos of Wright, who was studying to become a nurse, according to her family.
About 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, Wright was a passenger in a vehicle in the 2100 block of West Maypole. That’s when someone fired shots and she was hit in the back, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:44 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
Wright was the second-oldest of seven children and lived in Englewood, according to her 16-year-old sister, Kenesha Allen, who spoke softly and wiped away tears as she stood near the scene of the killing.
Wright also had a 2-year-old son, Daeshawn, whose father was killed in a traffic crash when he was traveling to see his newborn son for the first time, according to her cousin, Tamara Chapman, 22.
Despite the deaths of both of parents, Daeshawn has many family members who will see to it that he is raised in a loving environment, Chapman said.
“He’ll be well taken care of,” she said.
