What started out as a rap video filming session turned deadly when gunshots rang out, leaving Damond A. Dawson dead and four other people wounded early Tuesday in a Gresham neighborhood park.
A group was filming a music video in Foster Park in the 1400 block of West 84th Street about 2 a.m. when someone approached and started shooting, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. The shooter then ran away.
Dawson, 23, was shot in the back of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:10 a.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 8400 block of South Justine Street.
A 19-year-old woman was shot twice in the groin and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in serious condition, Gaines said.
Three more people who were injured in the shooting later showed up at Christ Medical Center, Gaines said. A 20-year-old man was shot nine times in the leg and shoulder; a 25-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the leg; and an 18-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the back. Their conditions were stabilized.
Police could be seen investigating between two Chicago Park District buildings, near basketball courts, a playground and tennis courts in the center of the park. Police tape blocked 83rd Street between Bishop and Laflin Streets.
The group was reportedly filming for a video for a song called “Two Techs and a 50 Shot.” Dawson was an aspiring rapper who performed as Thugga.
Police said cameras were rolling and the shooting may have been captured on video.
