Police do not know if Leonardo Betancourt was the intended target of the bullet that killed the 13-year-old as he rode in a car Monday evening in the Back of the Yards neighborhoode.
Leonardo was in the back seat of a vehicle traveling north in the 4500 block of South Ashland at 6:34 p.m. That’s when the other people in the car heard gunshots, and realized the boy had been shot in the back, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The driver took the teen to a firehouse a block north in the 4400 block of South Ashland, authorities said.
Leonardo was then taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:34 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the 4500 block of South Hermitage.
It was not immediately known if the teen was the intended target, police said.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral arrangements.
