The girl was a passenger in an SUV being driven by a 28-year-old man in the 2400 block of North Lake Shore Drive just before 1:30 a.m. That’s when a black Nissan pulled alongside and someone inside opened fire, Chicago Police said.

They took themselves to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, but the girl was later transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:59 a.m., authorities said. She lived in the 5100 block of West Fullerton.

The man was shot in the arm and suffered a graze wound to the head, police said. His condition had stabilized.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Lopez does not appear to be the intended target of the shooting.

The two people in the car with her during the shooting were documented gang members, and investigators believe the shooting was either gang- or road rage-related.
