Police believe an argument between two women led to the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Johan Jean late Monday in the West Rogers Park neighborhood.

A source said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two women. One of them has a child with Jean and the other was his girlfriend. Both women were armed, and Jean was eventually shot during the argument.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 11 p.m. found Jean lying in a gangway in the 6400 block of North Rockwell, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Jean, who lived in the 100 block of North Ashland in Evanston, was shot in the neck and was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m., authorities said.

Officers could be seen investigating in an alley and gangway, where a red Jeep was parked within the crime scene. Neighbors reported hearing between four and five gunshots. No weapons were recovered from the scene.

Police said no one was in custody as of Tuesday morning as Area North detectives conduct a homicide investigation.
