David McCray killed, 6-year-old niece wounded but survives shooting in Park Manor

David McCray was killed and his 6-year-old niece was wounded in a shooting Thursday afternoon as they took part in a water balloon fight in the Park Manor neighborhood.

They were outside near McCray’s home in the 6800 block of South Calumet playing in a neighborhood water balloon fight. Then, someone walked up and started shooting around 2:30 p.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A bullet struck McCray in the chest and a stray round hit the girl in the back of the head, authorities said.

McCray, 22, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he died at 2:49 p.m., authorities said.

The girl, identified by family members as Zariah Muhammed, was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in “guarded but stable condition,” police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.

She underwent surgery on Friday to remove a bullet fragment that was lodged in her skull, and authorities said she was expected to make a full recovery.

The girl was not thought to be an intended target, police said. No one was in custody for the shooting as of Monday morning.
