Deon Virges runs into store after being shot on South Side, but dies there

Eighteen-year-old Deon Virges ran into a business after being shot late Friday along the border of the Park Manor and Chatham neighborhoods, but died just moments later.

About 11 p.m., Virges ran into a store in the first block of East 75th Street with a gunshot wound to the throat, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Virges, of the 7500 block of South Calumet, collapsed and died there, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at 11:11 p.m.

Friends said Virges was going to the store to get something for his grandmother.

No one was in custody for the shooting as of late Sunday.

A memorial service will be conducted from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Empowerment Zone at 7421 S. South Chicago Ave.
