Sixty-two-year-old Robert Crenshaw, who suffered severe injuries when he was beaten during a fight last month in the the Near West Side University Village neighborhood, died of those injuries Sunday.
About 1:45 p.m. Feb. 28, officers found Crenshaw unresponsive on the ground in the 1500 block of West Hastings, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Crenshaw had been socializing with a group of men when he got into an argument with one of them, police said. He was punched in the face, fell back, and hit his head on the sidewalk. The man who punched him then ran away.
Crenshaw suffered swelling and a deep cut to his head, and was taken to Stroger Hospital. Twelve days later, he died there at 11:20 p.m. Sunday, authorities said. He lived about two blocks away in the same neighborhood where the fight happened.
An autopsy Tuesday found Crenshaw died of complications of blunt force head trauma suffered during an assault, and ruled his death a homicide.
No one was in custody as Area Central detectives investigate.
