Police: 18-year-old Dana Matthews fatally shot after shooting and trying to rob a man in Gresham

Authorities say Dana Matthews was shot and killed Monday night after shooting and trying to rob another man in the South Side Gresham neighborhood.

A 39-year-old told police he was in the 8300 block of South Elizabeth at 8:15 p.m. when he was approached by the 18-year-old Matthews, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Matthews shot the older man in the abdomen, but the older man returned fire, striking the alleged robber twice in the legs and twice in the neck, police said.

Matthews, who lived in the Woodlawn neighborhood, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 9:09 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

The older man was also taken to Christ, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

Area South detectives are waiting to interview the alleged victim, police said. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday morning.
