Jonathan Halbert, shot to death in driveway near his home in Gresham, may not have been the target

Jonathan “Jon” Halbert was killed in a shooting near his Gresham neighborhood home Thursday evening on the South Side, but may not have been the intended target.

The 30-year-old Halbert was outside about 6:10 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Carpenter, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A family member said he was in his own driveway, where children were also playing, when he was shot, and that he was not shooter’s intended target.

Two people walked up to him from an alley and shot him in the legs and shoulders, police said.

Halbert was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 6:59 p.m, authorities said.

An autopsy Friday determined Halbert died of multiple gun shot wounds, the medical examiner’s office said.

He was a 2005 graduate of Carver Area High School, a father, and was engaged to be married.
