Woman fatally shot by man she was riding in car with in Grand Crossing identified as Shaundel Wimberly

A woman shot to death Monday afternoon in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side has been identified as 27-year-old Shaundel Wimberly, who formerly lived in north suburban Evanston.

Wimberly was a passenger in a dark-colored vehicle at 4:39 p.m. in the 1300 block of East 78th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The man who was driving the vehicle fired shots, hitting Wimberly, who got out of the vehicle and tried to run away, authorities said.

But the man also got out and shot her several more times before getting back in and driving away.

Wimberly suffered gunshot wounds to the head and face, and was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

A graudate of Evanston Township High School, Wimberly, known to friends as “Carmel West,” also attended Oakton Communioty College. She worked at Burlington Coat Factory.

She lived several blocks away in the Avalon Park neighborhood.

Visitation and funeral services are planned for July 20 and 21 in north suburban Evanston.

The family is asking anyone with information to email patrick.loftus@chicagopolice.org.
