Monticello Scott and John Smith killed when someone gets out of car and starts shooting in Lawndale

Monticello Scott and John Smith were shot to death Thursday afternoon in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Scott, 26, and Smith, 24, were outside about 3:20 p.m. near Scott’s home in the 1400 block of South Springfield, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

That’s when someone got out of a dark-colored sedan and began shooting at them, police said.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Autopsies conducted Friday found Scott died from a gunshot wound to his chest, and Smith died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooter got back into the vehicle and drove away. No one was in custody as of Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened a few blocks from where three people were shot Thursday morning in North Lawndale and a block away from where three men were shot late Wednesday.
