A South Side man who gunned down his grandfather, allegedly at the urging of his grandmother, was sentenced to 40 years in prison Wednesday.

While Cook County Judge James Linn said it was sad that the adults in William Strickland’s life took him “down to the road of ruin,” he said Strickland had to take responsibility.

The 22-year-old didn’t make any comments before he was sentenced for killing his 72-year-old grandfather, also named William Strickland.

Marcus Smith killed, three others wounded when gunman opens fire on their car in West Englewood

A man killed in a shooting that left three other people wounded Monday night in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side has been identified as Marcus Smith.

The victims were traveling westbound in a car in the 2000 block of West 70th Place at 8:49 p.m. when someone opened fire, authorities said.

Smith, 39, was shot in the back of the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:28 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived on the block where the shooting happened.

An autopsy found he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.

A 38-year-old man suffered three gunshot wounds to the side and one to the left arm, and was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Chicago Police said.

Two other people, whose ages and genders were not known, were taken to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment, according to Fire Media Affairs.

When Martell Howard was fatally shot two months ago in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, he was hanging out with people he thought were his friends, according to his mother.

“He was not in a gang, he was an outgoing young man who loved his family and friends,” Peaches Barker McCorttrell said of her son.

And she should know.

“Martell was such a great help to me with his younger sister. He would pick her up and watch her until I got off of work,” she said. “My son was so helpful, I remember when I opened up my boutique and I couldn’t afford workers, so he said, ‘Mama, I will work for you for free’.”

Nineteen-year-old Armani Dickinson was shot to death early Wednesday in the Back of Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

Officers called to perform a well-being check at 12:24 a.m. in the 5300 block of South Hermitage found the victim lying unresponsive in the alley, according to Chicago Police.

Dickinson, of the 13000 block of South Ellis, had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:39 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Third man charged with murder for January home invasion that left 71-year-old Allen Levin dead in Albany Park

A third Arizona man has been charged with beating 71-year-old Allen R. Levin to death during a home invasion in the Northwest Side Albany Park neighborhood in January.

Ioan Lela Jr., 34, of Phoenix, Arizona, faces one count of first-degree murder, according to Chicago Police. He was arrested Feb. 18 in Phoenix and extradited to Chicago on Sunday.

Elijah Timatyos, 23; and Michael Bembea, 24, were previously charged with first-degree murder, home invasion causing great bodily harm and burglary, authorities said.

Levin was a family friend of Bembea and had provided financial assistance to Bembea’s family in the past, prosecutors said. In the days before the murder, Bembea and Lela discussed robbing Levin because of their own money problems.

Alcarez Reyes fatally shot Tuesday morning on block where he lived in Back of the Yards

Alcaraz C. Reyes was shot to death Tuesday morning in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

Reyes, 34, was shot in the chest at 6:18 a.m. in the 5200 block of South Winchester, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Reyes, who lived on the same block where he was shot, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:08 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Area Central detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.

Christian Ortiz killed, second man wounded in Sunday afternoon attack in Albany Park

Christian Ortiz was killed and a second man was critically injured in a shooting Sunday afternoon in the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

A male wearing a baseball hat and a dark jacket fired shots in the 4800 block of North Albany about 2:45 p.m. The suspect took off on a bicycle after the shooting, Chicago Police said.

The 23-year-old Ortiz suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:21 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police. He lived in the 2400 block of West Bryn Mawr.

A 26-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was taken in critical condition to Masonic Medical Center, police said.

The man who provided the gun used to kill 14-year-old Endia Martin was sentenced Monday to 100 years in prison after being convicted of murder.

“There are no excuses or rationalization for giving a child a gun to take to a ridiculous fight about a boy,” Judge Thaddeus Wilson said at the sentencing for Donnell Flora.

“Children in this city are dying by the hundreds because adults fail to and/or refuse to be adults,” the judge said.

At least 12 people died from violence in Chicago last week, including four men fatally shot on primary election day. Three of the victims died days or weeks after being shot, including a woman who died four days after being wounded by a man in a domestic murder-suicide.

The latest fatal shooting left a 23-year-old man dead and a 26-year-old man critically wounded Sunday afternoon in Albany Park. The older man suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was taken in critical condition to Masonic Medical Center, police said.

Jeanette Laureano was fatally shot Friday evening in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Marteace Tiffith dies in a hospital, nearly two weeks after being shot in Auburn Gresham

Marteace Tiffith, who who was shot nearly two weeks ago on the block where he lived in Auburn Gresham, died of his wounds Sunday.

The 42-year-old Tiffith was inside his vehicle in the 8800 block of South Wood Street around 6:45 p.m. on March 8 when a black SUV pulled up beside it and someone inside fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Tiffith was shot in the head, arm and shoulder, and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1:35 p.m. Sunday.

An autopsy found he died of complications of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
