Kelvin L. Davis, 24, was fatally shot May 1 in the Greater Grand Crossing community. Reader “Brea L.” posted this about him:

Such a young beautiful soul, gone before your time. You always brought a smile to my face. You didn’t deserve to this but I know you’re in a better place baby boy. And while you weren’t perfect you had a heart of gold therefore I know the gates of heaven will be open for you. I’ll miss you. See you again someday, rest peacefully.

Amari Sutton spoke out against the youth violence in the South Shore neighborhood.

Amari, 16, was found shot in the chest and neck near his home in the 1400 block of East 73rd Street about 6 p.m. April 23, authorities said.

A childhood friend, who asked not to be identified, said Amari was “really not” involved in gang activity at the time of his death.

I think he was targeted due to his past gang affiliation or from an argument at school,” the friend said. “In our community, where we grew up, kids, mostly teenagers who were not part of the violence would be targeted. We were so used to violence and people getting beat up, and if you weren’t a part of that, you were against them. If you were against them, they were against you.”
