Nearly two weeks after a Christmas night attack left brothers James Gill and Roy Gill III dead, 33-year-old Steven Freeman became the third person to die from the shooting in East Chatham.

The shooting happened about 9:20 p.m. Dec. 25, Chicago Police said. A group of people were gathered on the porch of a home in the 8600 block of South Maryland for a holiday party when someone wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt walked out from an adjacent alley and opened fire before running away.

Freeman, of the 7600 block of South Normal, was shot in the body and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 1:53 a.m. Friday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

James Gill, 18, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene; and Roy Gill III, 21, was shot multiple times and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died, authorities said.

Someone walked up to the 28-year-old Swanson about 11:15 p.m. as he sat in the driver’s seat of his car, parked in front of the Hyde Park Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the 800 block of East 46th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The suspect fired repeatedly, striking Swanson several times across the body, police said. Swanson, of the 7900 block of South Carpenter, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Swanson worked for FedEx, but it was not clear if robbery was the motive for the shooting. He had stopped in the neighborhood to visit family memebers after getting off work when he was attacked.

WEEK IN REVIEW: 2016 closes with at least 780 homicides in Chicago, and three more reported on first day of new year

The calendar turned from 2016 to 2017, and the temperatures took a downward spike, but nothing seemed to slow the pace of the killings in CHicago, as at least 13 people were killed in violence last week in Chicago.

The year ended with at least 780 homicides (762 by the Chicago Police method of counting) in Chicago, according to Chicago Sun-Times records. Another 12 people died in 2016 of injuries suffered in shootings or assaults in prior years, and another 11 were killed by police officers.

That was the highest total in more than 20 years. And the first day of 2017 saw another three fatal shootings, including two men who apparently shot each other to death inside a North Side business.

The shootout Sunday morning in an Uptown neighborhood business left Maurice Delaney and Ali Mohamed dead, the first reported homicides of 2017, authorities said. The men were shooting at each other about 4:25 a.m. New Year’s Day inside a business in the 4600 block of North Broadway, according to police.

Man charged with October fatal shootings of Chiquita Ford and Brian Fields outside Back of the Yards gas station

A man has charged with fatally shooting Chiquita Ford and Brian Fields last year in a Back of the Yards neighborhood gas station parking lot on the South Side is being held without bond.

Lorenzo Parish faces two counts of first-degree murder for the Oct. 28 shooting, according to Chicago Police.

Parish, 19, was not only caught on video surveillance, but two witnesses he knew identified him as the shooter, Cook County prosecutors alleged during Parish’s bond hearing Thursday.

The victims, both 30, were sitting in a parked vehicle about 10:20 p.m. at the station in the 1900 block of West Garfield when a gunman walked up and fired shots, striking Ford, a mother of two, in the side, and Fields in the chest, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene at 11:02 p.m., authorities said. Ford lived in west suburban Westchester; Field was from the 7200 block of South Wolcott.

Teens Malik McNeese and Stevie Jefferson killed in East Garfield Park; woman injured by stray bullet in her home

Two teenage boys—Malik McNeese and Stevie Jefferson were shot to death outside a home in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side Tuesday afternoon, and a stray bullet also injured a woman inside her home.

McNeese, 16, and Jefferson, 17, were on a sidewalk about noon in the 3400 block of West Fulton, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

That’s when a black SUV pulled up and someone inside opened fire, hitting the younger boy in the head, back and arm; and the older boy in the head, according to police.

McNeese, of the 3200 block of West Walnut, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:20 p.m., authorities said.

Simmieon McGruder and Simmie McGruder were shot to death in the Homan Square neighborhood Tuesday night on the West Side.

A police source and post by friends online said the men were brothers.

Officers responding at 11:13 p.m. to a call of shots fired in the 3200 block of West Lexington found the pair lying in the street, Chicago Police said.

Simmieon McGruder, 23, was shot in the head and left arm; and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:52 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Simmie McGruder, 25, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died about six hours later died at 5:13 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Sinai, authorities said.

No one was in custody for the attack as of early Thursday, police said.

15-year-old boy shot to death in Gresham alley identified as Gregory Livingston III

A 15-year-old boy who was shot to death Friday night in the South Side Gresham neighborhood has been identified as Gregory Livingston III.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired at 9:40 p.m. and found the boy with gunshot wounds to his head in an alley in the 8100 block of South Bishop, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Livingston, who lived about four blocks away in the 7700 block of South Throop, was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 10:30 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police say 19-year-old Andre Lacaze was fatally shot by a man he tried to rob in Chatham

Authorities say that Andre D. Lacaze was fatally shot by a man he was trying to rob in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side on Friday afternoon.

The 23-year-old man was walking in the 8200 block of South Ingleside about 1:54 p.m. when a 19-year-old man pulled a gun and tried to rob him, according to Chicago Police.

A fight broke out, and the 23-year-old, who was licensed to carry a firearm, pulled out his own gun and shot the would-be robber in the head, police said.

The 19-year-old, identified as Lacaze, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:25 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in west suburban Riverside.

A second attempted robber ran away after his companion was fatally shot.

The 23-year-old man was shot in the hip during the fight and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

No charges were filed against him, police said.

Man shot to death on block where he lived in Washington Park identified as Matthew Herring

A man who was fatally shot Wednesday night on the block where he lived in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side has been identified as Matthew L. Herring.

Herring, 32, was in front of a housing complex in the 6200 block of South Indiana when at least one person walked up and shot him in the head about 8:45 p.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Herring, who lived on the same block, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:08 p.m., authorities said.

Jose Nieves fatally shot by off-duty police officer during ‘altercation’ in front of home in Hermosa

An off-duty Chicago Police officer fatally shot 38-year-old Jose Nieves in the Northwest Side Hermosa neighborhood after an argument Monday morning, officials said.

Nieves was shot several times and did not have a weapon, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

“I have a lot more questions than I do answers at this time,” Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said during a briefing with reporters. “I came out because I wanted to make sure that the investigation was done properly.”

Johnson said the officer, a 57-year-old man assigned to the mass transit unit, does not live in the area, but knew the person he shot from another “confrontation a few weeks ago.”
