Police: Few leads in slaying of documented gang member

Few details have emerged in the slaying of an 18-year-old man who was shot to death in the Southwest Side Brighton Park neighborhood Wednesday morning, police said.
Fernando Mondragon was in the 4700 block of South Talman Avenue when a gunman approached and shot him in the chest about 10:58 a.m., said police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
Mondragon, of the 3000 block of South Artesian Avenue, was pronounced dead less than an hour later at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Mirabelli said Mondragon is a documented gang member. Other than a few basic details, investigators have little information to work with, Mirabelli said.
The gunman was described to police as a male, about 5-foot-6 tall, with brown hair and an olive complexion, Mirabelli said.
No one was in custody as of early Thursday morning. Area Central detectives were investigating.
