A 5-year-old boy and his mother were among those killed or injured since Thursday afternoon in acts of citywide violence that left at least another five people wounded.
Police said the boy and his mom were found shot to death inside a house in the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue about 2:40 a.m. Their deaths are being investigated as homicides.
Relatives, gathered at dawn on the edge of the crime scene, identified the 31-year-old woman as Chevonne Brown. The 5-year-old was identified as Sterling Sims, the youngest of Brown’s two boys.
Police released few details Friday morning. But relatives said Brown lived with her mother until about three months ago when she moved in with a boyfriend who lives on the block.
A man died early Friday after he was stabbed during a fight Thursday night in the New City neighborhood. About 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aaron Knox was fighting with another person who grabbed a knife and stabbed him multiple times before fleeing on foot in the 1000 block of West Garfield Boulevard, authorities said.
Knox, of the 5600 block of South King Drive, died at 4:06 a.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the medical examiner’s office. No one was in custody as of Friday night.
About 1:40 a.m., a man was critically wounded in a shooting in the 5000 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said. The 25-year-old man was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County for treatment.
About 11:20 p.m. Thursday, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg in the 1100 block of North Parkside Avenue. Police did not say what condition the boy was in or which hospital he was taken to.At 10:15 p.m., a 25-year-old man walked into Advocate Trinity Hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm. The man said he’d been shot in the 9300 block of South Paxton Avenue. He was listed in good condition.
About 6:20 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg in the 0-100 block of East 102nd Place. No further information on the shooting was immediately available.
An hour earlier, a 33-year-old man was shot in the arm and leg in the 800 block of East 82nd Street. His condition and hospital information wasn’t immediately available.
Area detectives are investigating.
